Would you like to start buying in a more sustainable and responsible way, but you don't know where to start?
Here are three tips that will help you!
First, pay attention to OCS (Organic Content Standard) or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification. These certifications guarantee that the cotton garment you are buying complies with international standards at all levels of production. Also pay attention to the Fairtrade label, which certifies that farmers are guaranteed a minimum wage. "Even if we consumers pay a higher price for organic cotton, farmers are often paid the same," explains Subindu Garkhel, cotton manager at the Fairtrade Foundation.
Secondly, try to avoid cotton mixed with other materials, such as synthetics, including recycled polyester. "When you mix synthetic and natural, it is very difficult to separate them again and so the garments end up in the waste stream," says Truscott, director of Textile Exchange.
And last but not least, try to support brands that are committed to switching to organic. Do a search on the internet or ask your friends who already buy responsibly: understand which brands are worth buying from and which would be better to move away from. "Big companies need to invest in supply and build demand," adds Truscott. We want and want the others to improve.
