As the saying goes: new year, new luck. But in reality, you don't need a new year to make new resolutions. Yet, most people give themselves a jolt in January and try to become a better version of themselves. We've picked out a few 2022 resolutions for you that might help make you an even more sustainable person.
Eat sustainably: buy locally and seasonally
It's best to buy your fruit and vegetables at the market or at an organic grocer, where you can easily ask for local products. If you buy your fresh ingredients at the supermarket, pay more attention to the label, explicitly stating where the food was produced: If it comes from the other side of the world, its purchase is certainly not sustainable.
Eliminate meat from your diet
How about going vegetarian one day a week, or even deciding to give up meat or dairy products for a few months? A vegetarian or vegan diet is becoming easier and easier. The supermarkets are filling up with veg alternatives that leave you lacking for nothing! If you need a little extra motivation, you can take part in the World Veganuary, where for the whole month of January people from all over the world decide to go vegan for at least one month. Maybe you can persuade your flatmates to join in and make it even more fun to try out new recipes.
Reduce waste by shopping packaging-free
Reducing waste means not only avoiding consumption but actively improving our ecological footprint. A first attempt is to buy products in bulk and without packaging as much as possible: With this small attention, you already prevent a significant amount of waste.
Think about the climate when you move around
If you travel a lot by bicycle or on foot, you kill two birds with one stone: you stay fit and can reduce your carbon footprint at the same time. For longer journeys, take the train or bus and use the travel time to read a good book or do some work.
Avoid food waste
A brief but important resolution: buy only what you really need, especially when it comes to food. You should also buy what you really need and regularly check your pantry.
Choose your holiday destination wisely
Why not stay local in 2022 for the sake of the climate? How about a hike in the mountains, a beach holiday at the nearest beautiful lake/sea or a city break by train to nearby European cities? You'll be amazed at how many hidden magical places are right next door. You don't have to fly to the Maldives to find paradise ;)
Buy clothes in sustainable and second-hand shops
Do you want to buy a new piece of clothing? Are you sure you really need it? If yes, go for the second-hand version or if you want to buy it new and high quality, opt for a sustainable, local shop. If you want to challenge yourself a bit this year, try renting your clothes and especially your children's clothes (should you need any).
