Christmas is just around the corner and there is so much to prepare for. Unfortunately, Christmas is not only the celebration of love and family, it is also the season of environmental sins...
Here we give you a checklist that will help you plan a completely sustainable gift-giving:
Eco-friendly gifts
Presents are a wonderful thing, yet for most, it just brings unnecessary stress. Especially in the period leading up to Christmas, when everyone rushes to the shops to find the perfect gift for their loved ones. You should make sure that your shopping supports local and young businesses and that you choose sustainable, high-quality products. To save you from last-minute shopping mistakes, we've collected some great eco-friendly Christmas gift ideas in our last blog post. Feel free to check it out!
To be able to put a completely sustainable gift under the Christmas tree, the packaging must of course also be sustainable! You can easily use baking paper, old magazines, newspapers, and books that are just lying around at home.
You can also reuse jars or fabric scraps as packaging. If you have a creative hand, you can also make your own gift boxes and bags.
Christmas tree
What kind of Christmas would it be without a Christmas tree? Hard to imagine, especially if you have children. What most people don't know is that Christmas trees are mostly treated with pesticides, poison for Mother Nature. That's why, if you should buy a Christmas tree, you should get one that is grown locally, that comes from crops on organic farms, from organic forestry, from FSC forestry operations or from production areas that have been certified in accordance with the EC Eco Regulation (BIO). Another environmentally friendly alternative would be to rent or buy a Christmas tree in a pot so that it can live on after the Christmas season.
Of course, with an eco-friendly Christmas tree, the Christmas tree decorations must also be sustainable. You can easily replace plastic ornaments with natural products like apples or straw stars. Or you can buy wooden ornaments that you can paint together with your children.
